Bobbie Moore Killed
Foreman of Bridge Gang Fatally Injured by Falling Timbers
Accident Occurred Saturday
Men Were Removing Old Bridge Near Joe Curry Place When Mr. Moore Was Killed
Robert Moore, foreman of the county bridge gang, was struck by
falling timbers of a bridge near the Joe Curry place, about four and a
half miles north of Corning, last Saturday morning, and on the evening
of the same day died from the effect of the injuries.
It seems that Mr. Moore was working on the removal of three large
pilings on the bridge, and two of them had been sawed off. The middle
one was nearly severed when all three swerved over toward Mr. Moore and
fell in such manner that the cap on the pilings struck him on the back
as he was stooping over. He was pinned under the timbers until other
members of the party could release him. Mr. Moore was brought to Corning
immediately and medical attention was at once given. It was found that
both legs had been broken, one of them in two places and the gentleman
had sustained internal injuries, from the effect of which he died at
about 4 o'clock. The accident happened about 8:30 in the forenoon. It
was a great shock to everybody.
The funeral services were held Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock in
St. Patrick's Catholic church, conducted by Rev. Father Dollard, and
interment was made in Calvary cemetery.
Robert Moore was born in Kewanee, Ill., June 22, 1866, being aged
55 years, 5 months and 4 days, at the time of his demise. He is a son of
John and Onnie Moore, both deceased, the father passed away in 1900 and
the mother in 1908. Robert came from Kewanee to Adams county, Iowa, in
1871, and located on a farm north of Quincy about two miles. His home
for some time past has been in Corning, south of the Hayden Hutchison
residence, in the former home of his parents. For the past 20 years Mr.
Moore has been employed with the county bridge gang, and for 18 years he
has been bridge foreman. As mentioned above he was injured Saturday when
the heavy piling gave way at an unexpected moment.
Mr. Moore is survived by one sister, Mrs. T. B. Fisher, of
Corning, and two brothers, William Moore of Kansas City, and John Moore,
near Gravity. One sister, Mrs. F. V. Schull, preceded him in death.
Beside the parties mentioned Mr. Moore leaves a number of other
relatives and a large circle of friends. He was a gentleman whom all
respected and he had no know enemies. He will be greatly missed from the community.
Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Lizzie
Conlisk, Dan Moore and Miss Maurine Mulligan, cousins, and William
Moore, all from Kewanee, Ill.; Miss Julia Moore, a cousin from St.
Joseph, Mo., and William Moore, a brother of the deceased gentleman, and
his wife, and son, William, from Kansas City.
