Carroll, Auburn Men Die in Crash, Three Others Hurt
Dick Mosman, Geo. Fasbender Killed Instantly
First County Traffic Fatalities of '55 Occur on 71 North of City
Two persons were killed and three injured severely in a
two-car crash 4 1/2 miles north of Carroll on Highway 71 about 1:15 a.m. Wednesday.
Killed instantly in the near head-on crash, Sheriff Al Thomp
said, were Richard G. Mosman, 21, of Carroll, and George W. Fasbender,
21, of Auburn, drivers of the two cars.
The accident marked the first traffic fatalities in Carroll
County in 1955.
Taken to St. Anthony hospital were Mrs. William Fasbender , 42,
mother of George Fasbender, his sister, Ruth, 14, and Marvin J. Beyerink,
23, all passengers in the Fasbender car.
Both cars, late model Fords, were demolished.
Mr. Mosman was reported en route home from Lake View. The
Fasbender car was northbound.
The injured were taken to the hospital in Huffman and Sharp ambulances.
Sheriff Thorup said that the Mosman youth was thrown out of the
car. Mr. Fasbender also was outside of the vehicle.
The accident occurred on a level stretch of highway a half mile
south of the Mt. Carmel corner. The sheriff said that the highway was
clear and that the cause of the accident was not determined.
Mrs. Fasbender sustained a skull fracture and cuts and bruises of the
head. Her daughter has a broken left thigh, compound fracture of the jaw
and cuts and bruises of the head. The Byerink boy received head injuries
and, cuts of the face but no fractures were found, according to his
physician. All were reported in a satisfactory condition Wednesday.
Funeral Services
Funeral services for the Mosman youth are set for 9:30 Friday
morning at SS. Peter and Paul's Church here. Burial will be in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery. Rites for George Fasbender are pending.
Both bodies are at the Olerich-Twit Funeral Home.
Rosary recitation for Richard Mosman will be at 8 p. m. Wednesday
and Thursday at the funeral home. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. F. H. Greteman will
lead the prayers Thursday night. Richard Mosman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe
Mosman was born: at Carroll Nov. 22, 1933. He had assisted his father as
a painter since his graduation from Carroll High School in 1952.
Survivors
Surviving with his parents are the following sisters and
brothers: Mrs. Calvin (Ruth) Kruse, Verndale, Minn.; Mrs. Dwight
(Lorraine) Doherty, Des Moines; Arden Mosman, Viola Center; Roland,
Lawrence, Olive Ann and Donald Mosman, Carroll; his grandmothers, Mrs.
Helen Mosman and Mrs. Helen Reck, six nieces and nephews.
A brother died at the age of two months.
He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul's Church.
The family home has been at 627 East Fifth Street the last 11 years.
George William Fasbender, son of Mrs. Louise Fasbender and the
late William Fasbender, was born on the home farm three miles south and
three and one-fourth miles east of Auburn Nov. 15, 1933. The home
address is Auburn, Rural Route 2.
Since attending a rural school and Lake City High School, he had
been assisting his mother on the farm.
Surviving with his mother are three sisters, Mrs. Norman (Betty)
Pudenz, Carroll, Ruth and Jeanne, at home, a brother, Bobby, at home,
and his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Wernimont of Breda.
He was a member of St. Mary's, Church at Auburn and the Holy Name
Society of the parish.

Funeral services were conducted at 9:30 Friday morning at SS.
Peter and Paul's Church here for Richard G. Mosman, 21, who was killed
in a two-car crash four and one-half miles north of Carroll on Highway
71 early Wednesday morning.
Requiem mass was offered by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. F. H. Greteman.
The Rev. Leo Lenz was in the sanctuary.
Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Kenneth
Finken, Robert Short, Wayne Sampson, Maurice Julich, Floyd Wernimont and
John Thompson.
Out-of-town relative at the rites were Mr. Mosman's
brothers-in-law and sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Kruse, Verndale, Minn.,
and Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Doherty, Des Moines, and his brother and
sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Arden Mosman, Viola Center.
Friends from away included: Darlene Geary and her mother, Mrs. D.
L. Geary, and Mr. and
Mrs. Dale Rench, Lake View; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Theur, Greenfield; Mr.
and Mrs. Otto Kruse,
Manning, and Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Book, Gray.
There were many other relative and friends from the surrounding area.
Mr. Mosman was returning from the Geary home at Lake View when
the accident occurred, also claiming the life of 21-year-old George W.
Fasbender of Auburn, driver of the other car.
The Mosman youth, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe H. Mosman, 627 East
Fifth Street, leaves three brothers, Ronald, Lawrence and Donald, and a
sister, Olive Ann, in addition to his two sisters and brothers named.
