Harold Nevius
Final rites were conducted Tuesday, June 21 at the United
Methodist Church in Corning for Harold Nevius, 70, of Corning. The Rev.
Don Strickler officiated.
Casket bearers were Pat Paul, Steve Paul, Lannie Paul, Michael
Paul, Jeff Nevius and Jamie Hogan. Honorary bearers were members of the
Corning Volunteer Fire Department.
Military rites were conducted by the Ourcq Post 117 American
Legion. Burial was in the Prairie Rose Cemetery near Corning.
Harold Nevius was the son of John and Bertha Gillet Nevius and
was born Oct. 28, 1917, at Corning. He died June 19, 1988, at St Joseph
Hospital in Omaha, Neb.
He attended grade and high school at Corning-and college at the
University of South Dakota. He returned to Corning and worked as a
grocery clerk and meat cutter until entering the U.S. Army in WW II.
On Sept. 29, 1940, he married Grace Paul in Corning. They
celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 1980 with all members of
their family present.
After returning from service with the U.S. Army, Mr. Nevius went
back to work as a meat cutter until 1960 when he joined the postal
service until his retirement in 1981.
Mr. Nevius was a member of the United Methodist Church, Ourcq
Post 117 American Legion, City Council and a 40-year member of the
Corning Volunteer Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clifford,
who died in infancy, and Donald who died in service in WW II.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Sandra Johnston and
husband, Carl; son, Donald Nevius all of Coming; daughter Mary Lee
Brenton and husband William, of Anita; four grandchildren, Debbie Hogan
and husband, James, Diane Johnston and Wendy and Holly Jo Brenton; one
great-granddaughter, Chelsey Hogan; brother, John Nevius and wife Jean
of Corning.
Memorials may be given in his name to the American Legion
Scholarship Fund and the Corning Volunteer Fire Department.
