Edwin Northup
Edwin Northup, Sr., died at his home south of Nodaway at 1:25
o'clock on Friday afternoon, November 24, 1933, at the age of 77 years.
He had been in failing health for the past year and a half as the result
of a stroke. Mr. Northup was born on October 1, 1856, at Kinney Grove,
near Victor, Iowa. He was one of the 15 children that came to bless the
home of Nathaniel and Harriet Sherlock Northup. Mr. Northup was married
on November 6, 1883, to Miss Hester Coglin, at Oxford, Iowa. Six
children were born to this union, all of them still living.
Mr. Northup and his wife went to farming in Douglas township in
Audubon county, living there until March, 1901, at which time they moved
to a farm south of Nodaway. They lived there for seven years and then
moved to a farm near Villisca, staying there until March of 1925, moving
back to a farm on the old home place south of Nodaway where he resided
until his death. Mrs. Northup preceded him in death on August 28, 1930,
in the present home. He was also preceded in death by eight brothers and
sisters, five of the eight dying in infancy.
Mr. Northup leaves to mourn his death, five sons, Ralph, Tim, Roy
and Arthur, all of Nodaway; Edwin, Jr., of Lamoni, Iowa; one daughter,
Mrs. J. W. Kerf, of Iowa City, Iowa; five brothers, Dick, of Ross, Iowa;
George and Harry, of Audubon, Iowa, Homer of New Ramer, Colorado; Jase,
of Denver, Colorado; and three sisters, Mrs. Frank Hockum, of
Opportunity, Wash.; Mrs. Martha Oxer, of Franklin, Nebr.; Mrs. Brenton
Sharp, of Dow City, Ia.; and 22 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren
and a host of relatives and friends.
Mr. Northup will be remembered for his fair and honest dealing in
every business transaction which he performed, his devotion to the
highest ideals of public welfare and his living regard and care for his
home and his children who finally cared for him in his last days.
Funeral service were held from the home Monday, November 27th at
2:00 p. m. and interment made in the Calvary cemetery beside his wife.
