Last Rites for Capt. Northup
Captain Edwin G. Northup, 25, an Army helicopter pilot, was
killed in Southeast Asia, Saturday, June 17. His parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Byron Northup of rural Lenox, were notified by military authorities on
Saturday that their son was missing in action and received a message on
Sunday that his death had been confirmed.
Edwin had lived in the Lenox community all of his life,
graduating from the Lenox High School in 1965. He then was appointed to
the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. from which he graduated
and received his commission as an Army Lieutenant in 1969. He was
married following his graduation.
Captain Northup is survived by his wife, Threse, who lives in
Wilmington, Delaware; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Byron Northup; four
sisters, Mrs. Linda Pershin of Creston, Mrs. Celia Curry of
Mitchellville, Mrs. Louise Sandstrom of Dallas Center, and Lisa Northup
at home; and a brother, John Northup at home.
Dr. G. Keigh Howland, mayor of the town of Lenox, issued a
proclamation asking that all flags in Lenox be flown at halfstaff on
Friday and Saturday in memory of Captain Northup.
His body was returned from the Far East and was brought to the
Roland Funeral Home in Corning on Friday night.
Funeral services were held at the St. Patrick Church in Corning,
Saturday morning, July 1 at 10:00 o'clock, conducted by Father Powers,
Military Chaplain. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.
Music was provided by Mrs. William Kelly organist. Casketbearers
were Capt. Donald Tunstall, Capt. Robert Merkey, Capt. John Yeisley, Lt.
Roy P. Oler and Lt. John Pennan.
