Patrick O'Day Dies Suddenly Here Thursday
Prominent Mercer Democrat Is heart Attack Victim;
Spent His Entire Life In This Vicinity
Funeral services were held Saturday morning, April 22, at 9:30
o'clock in St. Catherine's church, Aledo, for Patrick O'Day, 75, who
died suddenly of a heart attack Thursday afternoon, April 20, 1939, in
the East End Recreation hall here.
He had not been seriously ill previously to the fatal attack and
conversed with friends just before he was stricken. Dr. V. A.
McClanahan, Mercer county coroner, conducted an inquest in the Sherrard
Funeral home. It was stated that Mr. O'Day had not been in good health
since he had pneumonia a few years ago.
Prominent in Democrat Circle
Mr. O'Day had been active in the Democratic party more than 50 years and
served 35 years as precinct committeeman. At the time of his death he
was circuit court probation officer in Mercer county.
He was born northeast of Aledo in Preemption township and was the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael O'Day, pioneer resident of the township. He
farmed a number of years before removing to Aledo where he became
president and general manager of the People's Telephone company and
served in that position until the firm was sold in 1928.
Mr. O'Day never married. He was a member of the Catholic church
and is survived by a brother, Michael O'Day of Aledo, and a sister, Mrs.
Andrew Field, also of Aledo.
Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery
Rev. John T. Shields, pastor of St. Catherine's church,
officiated at the funeral services and burial was in St. Joseph's
cemetery in Preemption township. Pallbearers were Leonard Greer, Don
Tachappat, C. D. Lawson, Rodney Thompson, John O'Dea and Bernard Brennan.
