Chester J. Ocken
Breda -- Chester J. Ocken, 69, of 2625 62nd Street, Des
Moines, formerly of Breda, died Thursday, June 7, at Charter Community
Hospital in Des Moines.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
Saturday, June 9, at St. Bernard Church in Breda with the Rev. Richard
Birdsall as celebrant. Five children will be gift-bearers. Burial with a
military honor guard from Fred F. & Norman J. Bruening American
Legion Post at Breda, will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Serving as casketbearers will be Scott and David Ocken, Jim and David
Haubrich, Tim Snyder and Steve Reinart.
Visitation at the Twit Funeral Home in Carroll will be after 6
p.m. Friday. A rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Friday.
Mr. Ocken is survived by his wife, Lucinda, Des Moines; the
following children: Gerald Ocken and Elaine Haubrich, Council Bluffs;
Diane Wilberding, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Kathleen Hanley, New Fairfield,
Conn., and Sandra Goodwin, Olathe, Kan.; 13 grandchildren; a brother,
Dale Ocken, and a sister Ilene Pollman, Urbandale.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Ocken was born May 1, 1915, at Breda, a son of Joseph and
Delia Schaa Ocken. He was married to Lucinda Reinart on July 5, 1938, at
the former SS. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll by the Rev. Schenkelberg.
He received his education in St. Bernard High School and a barber
college at Sioux City. He operated the Corner Pool Hall and Barber Shop
in Breda and was manager of the Joyce Lumber Company there. He served as
city treasurer in Breda and moved to Des Moines in 1969 and was employed
there as assistant manager of the Des Moines Cashway Lumber Company.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre.
He was past commander of the Breda Legion post.
