Mrs. Elizabeth Ocken Died Monday Morning
Death came as a welcome relief to Mrs. Elizabeth Ocken of
Breda early Monday morning, following an illness of over a year's duration.
Elizabeth Schafers was born February 7, 1853, in Germany, where
she grew to young womanhood. She was married October 4, 1875, to John Ocken.
They lived in their native country until 1882 when they
immigrated to America, settling in Carroll county.
Eight children were born to then, one son, Conrad, dying in
Germany. The surviving children are Mary (Mrs. Henry Putman), DeSmet, S.
D.; John and Joe Ocken of Breda; Henry Ocken of Carroll; Theresa (Mrs.
Herman Woerdehoff) of Breda; Elizabeth (Mrs. George Wess) of Remsen; and
Anna (Mrs. A. J. Wolterman) of Breda. Her husband died in July, 1915.
Mrs. Ocken was a member of the Christian Mother society and was a
woman of sound Christian principles, and one who made herself beloved by
everyone with whom she came in contact, through her amiable ways and her
kindly disposition. She was a devoted mother and a splendid home maker for her family.
The funeral services were held at St. Bernard's church at 9
o'clock Wednesday morning, her four grandsons, Marvin and Vernon Wess
and Chester and Everett Ocken, acting as mass-servers. The last sad
rites were largely attended, the big attendance being a true testimony
to the high esteem in which the deceased was held in this community for so many years.
