Joe Ocken Dies; Former Lumber Man
Breda - Joseph Ocken, 79, retired Breda businessman, died at
3:30 a.m. Monday, May 31, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll after a
long illness. He was manager of the Joyce Lumber Company at Breda for 44
years before his retirement and had also served on the town council.
Mr. Ocken, who had lived a St. Anthony Nursing Home since July,
1963, was admitted to the hospital Saturday.
Requiem mass will be read at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Bernard
Church here by the Rev J. P. Hausmann. Interment will be in the parish
cemetery. He was a member of the church
Friends may call after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Twit Funeral Home
in Carroll, where the rosary will be recited at 8 and 8:45 p.m. Tuesday
and at 3, 8 and 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Mr. Ocken was a lifelong resident of Carroll County. He was born
Dec. 25, 1885, at Mt. Carmel and received his education at Breda. His
parents were John and Elizabeth Schaefer Ocken. On June 11, 1912, he was
married to Delia Schaa at Breda.
He is survived by three children, Chester Ocken, Breda; Mrs.
Sylvester (Ilene) Pollman, Breda; and Dale Ocken, Des Moines; 11
grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. George
(Elizabeth) Wess, Remsen, and Mrs. Anna Wolterman, Breda.
Preceding him in death were his wife on May 19, 1936; two sisters
and two brothers, Mrs. Henry (Mary) Pittman, John and Henry Ocken, and
Mrs. Herman (Thresa) Woerdehoff.
