H. F. Olberding Dies; Funeral Rites Thursday

Arcadia Pioneer Came to U. S. By Sailing Vessel 69 Years Ago

  Henry F. Olberding of Arcadia, who came to the United States from Germany in a sailing vessel 69 years ago, died at 5:15 p. m. yesterday at the St. Anthony hospital, where he had been a patient 16 days, suffering from pernicious anemia. He was 85 years old.
  Prior to being taken to the hospital, Mr. Olberding lived with and was cared for by his daughter, Mrs. James Quinn, in her home at Arcadia, which had also been his home for the past 16 years.

  The body is resting at the Olerich Funeral home here until 2:30 tomorrow afternoon, when it will be taken to the James Quinn home in Arcadia. The rosary will be prayed at the funeral home at 8 o'clock tonight and at the Quinn residence at 8 o'clock tomorrow night.
  Funeral services will be at 9 a. m. Thursday at St. John's church, Arcadia, of which Mr. Olberding was a member. Burial will lie in the parish cemetery, with six grandsons serving as pallbearers.
Mr. Olberding, son of Herman H. and Bernadine Olberding, was born in Germany November 15, 1862. The family left Germany March 5, 1873. crossing the ocean in a sailing vessel and arriving in New York after spending 36 days on the water.

  They came directly to Carroll from New York, with April 21, 1873, as the date of arrival here.
Carroll was then a mere village and the community had suffered from a prairie fire just before the family located here.
  They settled on what is now known as the Joe Schapman farm near Breda.

  In January 1892, Mr. Olberding was married to Catherine Terlisner. The couple established their home on a farm northeast of Arcadia, where Mr. Olberding lived until his retirement in 1920.
Surviving are five daughters, 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
  The daughters are: Mrs. Paul Rust (Bernadine), Carroll; Mrs. Matt Bauer (Elizabeth), Des Moines, Mrs. Leo Determan (Clara), Terril; Mrs. James Quinn (Florence), Arcadia; and Mrs. Harry Hass (Hildegarde), Woodward.
  Two sons preceded their father in death, Herman, who died at Camp Dodge October 12, 1918, and Leo, who died July 13, 1906.
  Mr. Olberding was the last of a family of seven children.
