Betty Jean Patterson
'Patsy'
Mrs. Patterson, 77, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at her
home in Charlotte.
Born July 23, 1932 in Greenville, SC, Patsy was the daughter of
the late Richard and Grace Ward Pearson. She was a devoted member of
Christ Presbyterian Church where she had served as Circle Chairman,
Bible School Chairman, and President of the Women of the Church, as well
as working twenty-five years in the church nursery.
In 1966 she became a den leader for Pack 82 and served in
scouting at her church in addition to a twenty-year career with Boys
Scouts of America where she was employed as Registrar. Mrs. Patterson
was the first woman to serve on a Woodbadge training staff and also
helped initiate a program of in-school scouting for challenged children.
In honor of her contribution to scouting, the Mecklenburg County
Council, Boy Scouts of America, proudly presented her with scouting's
highest honor, The Silver Beaver Award. Patsy was also an avid bowler.
Patsy's family includes Harold Patterson, her husband of 54
years; four children, Melody Hinson, Wendell Patterson, Jerry Patterson
and Angela Mack; three grandchildren, Christopher and Michael Hinson and
Miranda Mack; and one brother, Darrell Pearson.
A service to celebrate Mrs. Patterson's life will be held at 3:00
p.m. Friday, October 2 at Christ Presbyterian Church with the Reverend
Stephen Ratliff officiating. Her family will receive friends from 1:00
to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
