Rachel Paul

The death of Mrs. Jacob A. Paul occurred Saturday morning at 8:30 following a long siege of dropsy of the heart, from which she had been a patient sufferer for many years. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the homo in south Corning and was conducted by Rev. F. L. Roper. Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery beside her son, Jacob, jr., who died December 20. Rachel Miksell was born in the state of Pennsylvania, December 7, 1847, and was aged 67 years, 2 months and 13 days. She, with her parents, came to Iowa when a small child and lived near Knoxville, where she was married to John Samuel Elson, April 3, 1868. Nine children were born to them, three only living. They are William and Walter of this city and Anson of Ft. Madison. Mr. Elson died August 28, 1885, at Ft. Scott, Kansas, the home at that time. Mrs. Elson removed to Corning soon after the death of her husband where she has since lived. She was married to Jacob A. Paul April 26, 1886, and three children were born to them. Two died in infancy and Jacob, jr., died December 20, last, from which the devoted mother never recovered. Years ago when Mrs. Paul was in her prime, she was known far and near for splendid nursing in the home of the sick. No one ever called in vain to her for aid that she did not respond. Always with a pleasant smile and ever willing hands she has made many poor sick and discouraged mother or father glad; and with children she was a wonder; often remaining night after night to minister to an ailing child when no one else in the neighborhood could coax to take medicine. Many will remember Mrs. Paul with a full heart and loving thoughts for her many kind acts.
