George A. Phillips

The people of this community were very much surprised to learn of the sudden death of G. A. Phillips, last Friday morning. Mr. Phillips had been in apparently good health, with the exception of a slight pain in the shoulder and arm. On the morning of his death some of his friends advised him to be a little careful, and he thought them too solicitous of his welfare, insisting that he had no cause to worry. Twenty minutes after he had stepped to a neighbor's to call a physician he passed away, the trouble being heart failure. The funeral services were held in St. Patrick's church, Sunday last, conducted by Rev. Father Richard Dollard, and interment was made in Calvary cemetery.
George A. Phillips was born in Glouchestershire, England, November 15, 1844, and was 73 years, 2 months and 4 days old. He came to America just after the close of the civil war, and settled in La Salle, Ill. He was married to Miss Sarah Packer, at Ottawa, Ill., in 1870, and to them were born four children, Will, Fred, Charles and Susie. The latter died in infancy. The three sons are residents of Adams county.
Mrs. Phillips died December 16, 1879, and in 1886 Mr. Phillips came to Adams county, living for a time with his sons. He was married to Mrs. Henry Tittle, May 20, 1895. The latter Mrs. Phillips died three years ago in April, of this year. Mr. Phillips resided on the home farm in this county until about ten years ago, when he retired from the active duties of life and came to Corning to live. He was one of our best known citizens, a fine companion, a faithful worker in the church, and withal one of our very best citizens. His cheery greeting and pleasant smile will be missed by a great many friends, who sympathize with the love ones in their loss.
All the children were present at the funeral; also two brothers, H. J. and Samuel Phillips, and a niece, Miss Leona Phillips, from Centerville; and a nephew, Isaac Wren, of La Salle, Ill. They are the near relatives of the deceased.
(Adams County Union-Republican, Wednesday, January 24, 1917)

Note: Died 19 January 1917.
