Edward J. Pietig, 81, of rural Carroll died Saturday, Jan. 21,
2006, at his home following a long illness.
Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday,
Jan. 26, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with the Rev. James
McCormick presiding. Lector will be Louis Tigges. Gift bearers will be
Tom and Pat Louis and Robert and Marge Tigges. Eucharistic ministers
will be Dawn Cavanaugh and Marcus Cavanaugh.
Casket bearers will be Mr. Pietig’s grandsons: Rex Mitchell,
Chad Mitchell, Ted Schirck, Tim Schirck and Marcus Cavanaugh; and his
nephew, Ray Pietig.
Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery at Carroll.
Visitation starts at 2:30 and a rosary will be prayed at 3
Wednesday afternoon at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. Holy Spirit Parish
will hold a Christian wake service at 6:30 Wednesday night at the
funeral home. Visitation will resume at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Kuemper Catholic
Schools Foundation.
A son of William J. and Rose (Kerkhoff) Pietig, he was born Nov.
8, 1924, at Lidderdale, spent his younger years there and graduated from
Carroll High School.
He had brief careers as a truck driver, packing plant worker,
bartender and beer distributor before settling on farming.
He and Marie Heires-Schirck were married March 30, 1959, at St.
Joseph Catholic Church in Carroll. They made their home on a farm east
of Carroll. Mr. Pietig retired in 1986.
Mr. Pietig’s great love was fishing, and he traveled to
northern Minnesota for 14 years fishing for walleye and muskie. He and
his wife spent 44 summers at their lake home at Cass Lake, Minn. Mr.
Pietig was a member of Holy Spirit Parish.
Survivors include five children: Terri Mitchell and her husband,
Jim, of Omaha, Neb., Ted Schirck and his wife, Kate, of Milaca, Minn.,
Dawn Cavanaugh and her husband, Mike, of Ankeny, Jill Pietig and her
husband, Michael Hutchings, of Colchester, Vt., and Jay Pietig and his
wife, Laura, of Plainfield, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; 10
great-grandchildren; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Marian Martin of
Omaha, Neb., Norma Pietig of Carroll, Agnes Heires of Arcadia, Ann
Heires of Carroll and Darlene and Don Bengford of Odebolt.
Mr. Pietig was preceded in death by his parents; his wife,
Margie, in January 2004; four brothers: Raymond, Wayne, William and
Franklin Pietig; and two sisters: Angeline Tigges and Lucille Brinker.
