Miss Reiff Dies Enroute to Carroll
Anna Reiff, 71, of Carroll, who last Tuesday accompanied the
Rev. Gabriel Barry on his air journey to his native Ireland, was
stricken with a heart attack Saturday night at O'Hare Airport in Chicago
and died en route to a hospital. Miss Reiff was on her way home from
Ireland and became ill in the loading area prior to boarding a plane for
Des Moines.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Lawrence Church,
with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Henry B. Karhoff as celebrant of the requiem
mass. Interment will be in St. Bernard Cemetery at Breda. Friends may
call after 2 p.m. Monday at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll, where the
rosary will be recited at 8 and 8:45 p.m.
Miss Reiff had been housekeeper for Fr. Barry since 1924, first
at Royal, then at Varina, Pocahontas , Livermore, and since his
retirement in 1954, at Carroll. She and Mrs. Norbert Thielen accompanied
the Catholic priest in an ambulance plane from Kansas City, Mo., to
Shannon, Ireland; and he now resides near there with his brother,
William J. Barry.
Miss Reiff, daughter of John and Katherine Reiff, was born at
Breda Jan. 6, 1896, and received her education in St. Bernard School.
She lived with her parents until, after her mother's death, she and her
father moved to Milford. She was employed by the telephone company in
Milford until beginning her duties as Fr. Barry's housekeeper. In
Carroll she was a member of St. Lawrence Church and lived at 1606 North
West Street.
Her only survivor is a sister Mrs. Joe (Elizabeth) Long of
Manilla. One brother and three sisters preceded her in death.
