Herman Reiff Passes Away
Dies at St. Anthony's Hospital, Tuesday, Sept. 8.
Forty-six Year a Resident of Carroll County.
Herman Reiff, of this city, died at St. Anthony's Hospital at
1:30 a. m. Tuesday morning, September 8th, aged 76 years, 11 months and
26 days. The cause of death was pneumonia. Mr. Reiff has been in poor
health for the past year having suffered severely from an attack last
winter, similar to the one that ended fatally last week, and the effects
of which left him in a greatly weakened condition. However, he was able
to be up and around until about nine days before his death.
Mr. Reiff was born at Kolen, Germany, September 14th, 1837, and
would have rounded out his seventy-seventh year if he had lived to
Monday of this week. He came to this country when about sixteen years of
age, his first home being at Sinsiniwa Mound, Wisconsin. He was married
at that place in 1864 to Miss Margaret Fehring, who survives him. Seven
sons and one daughter were born to them, all of whom are living. The
sons are Steven, at Buck Grove; Math, at Breda; Joseph, at Carroll;
Herman, at Lanesboro; Henry, near Mt. Carmel; Ben, in Carroll, and John,
near Mt, Carmel. The daughter, Mary, is still at the parental home.
Shortly after marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Reiff located in Jackson
county, where they made their home for four years and then moved to
Carroll county and settled near Mt. Carmel, where they lived for
twenty-eight years, during which time the deceased was successfully
engaged in farming. Eighteen years ago he retired and moved to Carroll
where he has ever since .made his home. He was a lifelong member of the
Catholic church and faithful to its services and to all his duties as a
Christian. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society. The funeral
was held Thursday morning at SS. Peter and Paul's Church where the
deceased had been a worshipper and was conducted by the pastor, Rev.
Father Kuemper. A large congregation was in attendance to pay the last
tribute of respect to one who has been an upright and honorable citizen
throughout his forty-six years of residence in this county county.
