Herman Reiff of Lidderdale Succumbs Today
Had Been in Poor Health For Several Years But Died Suddenly
Lidderdale (THNS) - J. Herman Reiff, 72, died suddenly about
8:30 this morning at his home in Lidderdale. He had been in poor health
for the last eleven years, having been afflicted with asthma during all
of that time and heart trouble in later years. Three weeks ago he became
seriously ill and was taken to the McVay Hospital at Lake City, where he
was a patient for a week. He continued to show improvement after his
return home, and was able to be up and about the house. He was sitting
in a chair this morning when he was stricken.
The body is at the Dietrich Funeral Home in Carroll, where it
will rest until the time of the services.
Complete arrangements for the rites have not been made, awaiting
word from a son, 'Frank, in Arkansas. The services will probably be held
at Holy Family Church here Monday morning.
Mr. Reiff had spent most of his life in Sheridan township. He was
born Jan. 12, 1869 in Dubuque county, a son of Herman and Margaret Reiff.
He was only four years old when the family moved to this vicinity.
May 11, 1897, he was married to Miss Catherine Muehl at Our Lady
of Mt. Carmel Church. With the exception of three years spent in Sac
county, Mr. and Mrs. Reiff farmed in Sheridan township from the time of
their marriage until Mr. Reiff's ill health forced their retirement in
1928. After leaving the farm, they lived in Lanesboro and Lidderdale,
having returned to Lidderdale from the former place only a week ago.
They were building a new home here, the foundation having been started.
Mr. Reiff is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters:
Frank, of Arkansas; Mrs. Hilbert Reinart (Cecelia), Manning; Melvin,
Glidden, and Mrs. Paul Schmitt (Agnes). Carroll. One son, Raymond, died in infancy.
He also leaves six grandchildren and three brothers, Joe Reiff,
Breda; Steve, Manilla, and Matt, who lives in Minnesota.
Mr. Reiff was a member of Holy Family Church here.
