Nearly 74
Mr. Reiling, who would have been 74 years old in June, spent nearly all his life in Kniest township. His parents died when he was a small boy and he and two older brothers were adopted by their maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Schirck. When he was nine years old he came with his grandparents from Mansfield, O., to live on a farm near Mt. Carmel.
In his youth, Mr. Reiling worked as a farm hand and one time sowed wheat on the ground where the town of Breda now stands.
On January 19, 1886, he was married to Miss Mary Teresa Wernimont at St. Bernard's church, Breda. The Rev. Conrad Schulte read the nuptial mass.
Near Breda
The first year of their married life was spent on a farm northeast of Breda. Then they moved to the Ortner farm near Mt. Carmel and in 1899 moved to the place four and one-half miles east of Breda which they bought and which has since been the family home.
In January, 1936, Mr. and Mrs. Reiling celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Reiling had 12 children, three of whom have passed away. Anna died in infancy, Gregor at the age of 17 and Anton at 22.
Surviving Mr. Reiling are his wife and the following sons and daughters: Mrs. Joe Schelle (Clara), Breda; William Reiling, Coon Rapids; Mrs. Ed Underberg, (Caroline), Springville, N. Y.; Mrs. Henry Gehling (Regina), Carroll; John Reiling at home; Wendel Reiling, Lake View; Theodore Reiling, living near Maple River; Frank Reiling, Lake View, and Mrs. Leo Rosonke (Mary), residing near Auburn.
He also leaves one brother, Henry Reiling, of Casistota, S. D.
Mr. Reiling was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church and was interested in affairs of the parish.
Failing Health
About two years ago, Mr. Reiling's health began to fail. Last July he entered the St. Anthony hospital in Carroll and underwent two serious operations for cancer. For a while he improved remarkably and was able to go driving in his automobile. About January first he again took treatment with continued hope until some time later when it became know that his ailment was incurable. He suffered patiently and still enjoyed visits from neighbors and friends. He was up and about until two weeks ago, when he became bedfast and failed rapidly from then on. He passed away peacefully amid the members of his family who cared for him tenderly during his illness.
Mr. Reiling's main occupation was farming, but he had also done road work and for some time was connected with the creamery business in Breda.
