Last Rites For A. Roettler Of Viola Tuesday
Greene Township Resident for Many Years Dies Sunday at Viola; Was
74 Years of Age
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning from the St. John's
Catholic church at Viola for August Roettler, 74, resident of Greene
township for many years, who died Sunday at the home of his cousin, Mrs.
Louis Schaechter.
Mr. Roettler had made his home with the Schaechter family for the
last 12 years. He had been in declining health for some time, suffering
from hardening of the arteries, but he was confined to his bed only 10
days prior to his death.
August Roettler was the son of Stephen and Caroline Roettler and
was born in Baden, Germany, July 31, 1867. At the age of 15 he came to
America to make his home with his uncle, the late Jacob Roettler. For
many years he was employed at the Railroad Express office in Davenport.
Surviving relative are the cousins, Mrs. Louis Schaechter, Mrs.
Lena Schmitt, Mrs. Emma Jordan and Fred Roettler of Viola; Mary Jones of
Matherville and Mrs. Freda Peterson of New Windsor.
Friends met at the Davis funeral home Monday evening to recite
the rosary. Rev. J. T. Shields officiated at the funeral on Tuesday and
burial was in the Catholic cemetery north of Viola. Pallbearers were
John Schaechter, Charles Schaechter, Chester Carlson, Richard Flaherty,
Walter Mack and Clarence Mohr.
