Florance Schaechter
Florance Mae Schaechter, 90, formerly of Viola, died Sunday,
Oct. 18, 1998, at Oak Glen Home.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic
Church, Viola. Burial will be at St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be
Wednesday 5 to 8 p.m. with a wake service at 8 p.m. at the church.
Memorials may be made to the St. John's Altar and Rosary Society. Kirk,
Huggins and Esterdahl Funeral Home, Orion, was in charge of arrangements.
Florance Mae was born Feb. 8, 1908, in Osborne County, Kan., the
daughter of Roswell Henry and Lena Whan Soseman. She married Charles
Francis Schaechter June 28, 1930, in Peoria. He died May 16, 1992.
She received her education in the rural schools of Mercer County,
Matherville, and Viola High Schools and the former Illinois Teacher's
College of Macomb. She taught 38 years in Mercer County and was a
special reading instructor in the Rock Island Public Schools. She also
attended Marycrest College, Davenport.
She was a member of the St. John's Catholic Church, Viola, a
member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the church, she held life
memberships in the National Education Association, the Illinois
Education Association and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, a
former member of the Women's Business and Professional Organization of
Aledo and a member of Mercer County Retired Teachers.
She was born in a log and sod cabin on the prairies of Kill Creek, Kan.
She enjoyed geneology and did extensive research on seven family histories.
Survivors (and spouses) include daughters, Margie A. Frakes,
Orion, and Mary Jean "MIM" Merta (Jeffrey), Dunedin, Fla.; a son,
Charles Robert Schaechter (Mary Lou), Moline; 12 grandchildren; and 23
great-grandchildren. She was preceded by her parents; husband; three
brothers; and a sister.
