| John Schaechter
Funeral services for John F. Schaechter, 83, of Viola, were
held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Crummy and McKitrick Funeral Home,
Viola, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Viola. The
Rev. Edward Harkrader, pastor, officiated. The Rev. Louis Schaechter,
brother of the deceased was present at the altar. Burial was in St.
John’s Cemetery, Viola.
Memorials were made to St. John's Church.
Mr. Schaechter died Wednesday, Jan. 18 at St. Anthony's
Continuing Care Center, Rock Island.
Mr. Schaechter was born April 1, 1900, in Mercer County, son of
Louis and Ida Roettler Schaechter. He married Helen McGaugly May 7,
1935, in Aledo. She died Nov. 30, 1982.
He was a partner in the Schaechter Brothers Garage, Viola, since
the 1920s, retiring in 1972. He was a member of St. John's Roman
Catholic Church, Viola and the Viola Booster Club.
He was a former member of the Viola Village Board and was a
former justice of the peace for Mercer County.
Surviving are a son, J. William Schaechter of Viola; a daughter,
Mrs. Catherine Huggins of Sherrard; five grandchildren; two
great-grandsons; four sisters, Agnes Mack of Viola, Josephine Hunting of
Phoenix, Az., Genevieve Flaherty of Andalusia and Margie Steiner of
Sacramento, CA; and two brothers, Charles of Viola and the Rev. Louis of
Rock Island.
