Henry Schenkelberg and Martin Fay Are
Fatally Injured In Auto Accident Here
Missouri Trucker in Critical Condition at Hospital;
Fourth Occupant of Death Cars Unhurt
Carroll and Lidderdale Cattle Buyers Enroute Here at Time
Accident Occurs On Highway 30 Three Miles East of Carroll
Two men were dead and a third was in a critical condition
today as the result of a car-truck crash on highway 30 three miles east
of Carroll at 6:45 o'clock Monday night.
The dead were:
Martin Fay 30, Carroll, cattle buyer, who died at the wheel of
the car a few minutes after the accident.
Henry Schenkelberg, 44, Lidderdale, cattle buyer, who died in a
hospital here Tuesday morning 15 hours after the crash without regaining consciousness.
Critically injured, but expected to live, was:
Oliver Manley, 23, Maryville, Mo., truck driver, who was driving
the truck involve d in the accident.
A brother of Oliver, E d Manley, was not injured.
The accident occurred when the two cars collided at the
intersection of the Lidderdale road and highway 30.
Highway patrolmen investigating the accident theorized that the
brakes on Schenkelberg's car, which Fay was driving, froze as a result
of the rain and sleet. They said a frosted windshield also may have
contributed to the tragedy, which was the first fatal auto accident in
Carroll county this year.
Manley was driving toward Carroll and Fay and Schenkelberg were
driving onto the highway from the north at the time. The truck and car
were virtually demolished by the impact.
Fay was unconscious when officers reached the scene of the
accident and died behind the wheel without regaining consciousness. One
ear had been cut off by flying glass and a blood hemorrhage is believed
to have been a factor in his immediate death.
Schenkelberg suffered internal injuries, a gash on the head that
cut in almost to his brain and other injuries.
Manley suffered a concussion of the brain, broken ribs, face
cuts, mangled hands and other injuries, but was expected to live.
