Herbert Schultz
Herbert F. Schultz Sr. of Rock Island passed away suddenly on
Saturday, June 11, 2005, at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., just one
day before his 80th birthday.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church,
Moline. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where
military honors will be presented by Moline American Legion Post 246.
Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock
Island. Memorials may be made to Lymphoma Research at Mayo Clinic c/o
his family or to Blessed Beginnings Pre-School--TOPS Scholarship at
Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mr. Schultz was born June 12, 1925, in Davenport, a son of Frank
L. and Mabel K. Zeis Schultz. He married Manda Faye Lewer Aug. 28, 1949,
in Waseca, Minn.
Herb started working at the age of 14 in a bakery to earn money
for room and board. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1943.
He later graduated from St. Ambrose College and from the University Of
Illinois School Of Law.
Mr. Schultz began his long and distinguished career in law by
serving as a Rock Island County assistant states attorney. He later
joined the law firm of Franklin Wingard and continued to practice law
until his death. The last 13 years he practiced with his son, Herbert
Jr., in the firm of Schultz and Shearer.
Herb was a member of The Rock Island County Bar Association for
53 years, and served on the Board of Managers. He was a member of the
Illinois Bar Association and was presented the Senior Counselor award
for practicing law for 50 years. He had served as an Assistant Illinois
Attorney General and was the city attorney for Milan and Reynolds. Herb
also served as the attorney for the Rock Island Housing Authority.
He was a World War II Navy veteran, and specialized in radar
technology. Herb was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, and a
former member of First Lutheran Church, Rock Island, where he was a
member and past president of the church council. He was a member and
past president of the Rock Island Public Library Board of Directors,
member of the Rock Island Rotary Club, Paul Harris Fellow and a member
of Short Hills Country Club, East Moline.
Herb loved his family and was a wonderful husband, father and
grandfather. His greatest joy was attending his grandchildren's school
activities and sporting events. He enjoyed golf, fishing in Minnesota,
playing bridge, reading, words and history. He and Manda Faye had season
tickets to the Iowa Hawkeye football games for 40 years.
Survivors include his wife, Manda Faye; daughters and
sons-in-law, Susan and Kenneth Dechert, Rock Island, Diane and Stuart
Schultz, Huntsville, Utah; son and daughter-in-law, Herbert F. and Heidi
Schultz Jr., Milan; grandchildren, Amanda and Michael Dechert, and
Emmett and Max Schultz; and a sister, Jean Gauley, Reynolds. He was
preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles Schultz.
