James Shaughnessy
James E. Shaughnessy, 73, of Aledo, died Wednesday, Feb. 26,
2003, at VA Medical Center, Iowa City.
Services are 11 a.m. today at St. Catherine's Catholic Church,
Aledo. Burial is in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Keithsburg, with
military rites accorded by Mercer County VFW Post 1571. Memorials may be
made to the family. Dennison Funeral Home, Aledo, is handling arrangements.
He was born May 28, 1929, in Chicago, the son of James E. and
Mary Irene Miller Shaughnessy. He married Lorraine Henry in 1977 in Alexis.
He was a graduate of Maryville Academy, Chicago, and graduated
cum laude from Notre Dame University. He also earned his Masters degree
from Loyola University, graduating magna cum laude.
He was a teacher and athletic director at the former Roosevelt
Military Academy, Aledo, for 17 years until the school closed. He also
managed the Aledo Swimming Pool and was a certified nursing assistant at
Lynncrest Manor, Aledo.
He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Aledo, and
Mercer County VFW Post 1571. He enjoyed golfing and he was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine, Aledo; children and
spouses, Molly Boynton and Todd W. Litwiler and Mandy and Ross Gardiner,
all of Aledo, and Michelle and Ibrahim Shaban and Martha Boynton, all of
Chicago; six grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Norris, Dallas, Texas, and
Mary Shaughnessy, formerly of Chicago; and brother, Robert Shaughnessy,
Nashville, Tenn. He was preceded in death by his parents.
