Funeral Services Held Monday for John Slavish
Funeral services were held Monday for John Slavish, 54, xxx
Matherville businessman, who died Thursday, March 22, 1962 at Moline
Public hospital. He had been admitted to the hospital only hours before
his death.
Services were held at 9:30 a.m. at the Crummy Funeral Home in
Viola and at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic church at
Matherville. The Rev. Richard Slavish his son, was celebrant. The Rev.
Robert Lee, assistant pastor at St. Anne's Roman Catholic church,
Moline, served as deacon. The Rev. Richard Shannon, assistant pastor of
St. Joseph's and St. Anne's churches, was sub-deacon. The Rev. C. M.
Meyer, the pastor of St. Anthony's, gave the sermon.
Burial was in St. John's cemetery at Viola.
Mr. Slavish was born in Yugoslavia, March 1, 1909, a son of Johan
and Pauline Snyder Slavish. He came to this country when he was two
years of age and settled in the Matherville community where he has since resided.
He attended Matherville schools and married Katherine Kovaveyish,
who preceded him in death in April of 1945. He later married Ailene Hilderand.
He was a member of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic church, fourth
degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Monmouth Council 1xxx, The
Croatian Lodge 4xx, Pittsburg, Pa.
Survivors include the widow; three sons, the Rev. Richard
Slavish, assistant pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic
Church, Galesburg; James of Matherville, with whom he was engaged in a
burial vault business as well as a coal business in Viola and Thomas, at
home; two daughters, Mrs. George VanGetson, Milan, and Miss Kathleen
Slavish, at home; two grandchildren; two brothers, Matt and Joe, both of
Matherville; two sisters, Mrs. Ann Fisher, East Moline, and Mrs. Mary
Sanquist of Matherville.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
