LaVern B. Smith
LaVern B. Smith, son of Jerome and Lydia Bellinger Smith, was born in
Adams county, Iowa, March 9, 1883 and departed this life May 15, 1960 at
Rosary hospital, at the age of 77 years, 2 months and 6 days.
He was united in marriage to Lillian Chamberlain on April 24, 1908 after
which they built a home on the farm south of Corning. Here their two
children Morris J. and Emmeline were born.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1942, Morris in 1943 and
Emmeline who died at the age of six years. That vacancy in the home was
filled by Martha Jean who was adopted in 1932. Cloyd Poole, who now
lives in Illinois, also made his home with them for many years when he
was in school.
LaVern spent most of his life near Corning. As a farmer, he operated a
modern chicken and dairy business until failing health forced him into
semi-retirement. Nevertheless, he continued to be active in affairs of
the community. He was treasurer of the Farmers Cooperative Exchange and
a treasurer of the school board for about 30 years.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian church, the Farm Bureau, the
Eastern Star and the Masonic Lodge.
He leave to mourn his departure his daughter, Martha Jean, her husband,
Don Preston and their son Byron of Iowa City, his daughter-in-law Opal
Smith Gipe of San Bernardino, Calif., nieces, Mrs. LeRoy Brown of
Corning and Mrs. Loyd Murphy of Winterset and other relatives and many friends.
Services were held from the Roland Funeral Home in Corning, May 18, 1960
with Rev. W. H. Sinning officiating. Music was by Mrs. Bert Peckham,
Mrs. Doyle Tranbarger, Mrs. Dick Cook. Pallbearers were Otis Fife,
Walter Fife, Walter Jones, E. E. Thomas, Lewis Goldsmith and George
Martin. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery.
