Edgar Snyder
1915-2009
Edgar Snyder, 93, of Breda, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, at St.
Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, at
St. Bernard Church in Breda. The Rev. Joe Dillinger will officiate.
Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 25, at Sharp Funeral
Home in Breda, where a rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. and a Christian
wake service by St. Bernard Parish will be held at 7 p.m..
Burial, with Military honors by the Breda American Legion, will be in
St. Bernard's Cemetery at Breda.
Lectors for the Mass will be Joe Snyder, Ron Snyder and Jim Snyder.
Gift bearers will be Anne Snyder, Jean Snyder and Katie Snyder.
Eucharistic minister will be Madonna Boeckman.
Casket bearers will be Paul Snyder, John Snyder, Nick Polking, Chris
Holdren, Michael Holdren and Andrew Snyder.
A son of Joe and Helen (Hammers) Snyder, he was born Oct. 27, 1915,
at Breda. He spent his lifetime in the Breda community and graduated
from St. Bernard High School in 1933.
Following high school, he farmed until September of 1942, when he
entered the U.S. Army. He served during World War II and was honorably
discharged in September of 1943, at the rank of corporal.
On Feb. 16, 1942, he married Alita G. Reinart at SS. Peter and Paul
Church in Carroll. The couple farmed in the Breda area.
Mr. Snyder was a long-time pork producer and grain farmer, retiring
in 1977. He was also a sales representative for Pioneer Seed Co. and
Garst Seed Co.
He was a member of St. Bernard Parish and the Breda American Legion,
where he served as post commander. He was a former 4-H leader and former
member of the Carroll Community School Board. He enjoyed his family,
traveling, beer, reading, watching baseball on television and he was a
staunch Democrat.
Survivors include his wife, Alita Snyder of Breda; six children and
their spouses: Joe and Marilyn Snyder of Lawrence, Kan., Ron and Pat
Snyder of San Leandro, Calif., Jim and Nancy Snyder of Wichita, Kan.,
Tim and Kathy Snyder of Breda, Ann and Russ Polking of Newton and Marty
and Carol Snyder of Breda; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren;
a son-in-law, Randy Holdren of Maxwell; and sisters-in-law, Lucinda
Ocken of Plantation, Fla., and Lucille Davis of Omaha, Neb.
Mr. Snyder was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Debra
Holdren; sisters, Mae Feldmann and Edith Leonard; brothers, Cyril
Snyder, Walt Snyder, and Fred Snyder; and brothers, Wilfred Snyder and
Carl Snyder, in infancy.
