William E. Stancliff, 78, Prominent Viola Farmer and Antique Collector, Dies
Funeral services for William E. Stancliff, 78, prominent Viola
farmer and antique collector, were held Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 14,
1952, from the late home at 2:00 and from the Viola Presbyterian church at 2:30.
Rev. Howard Van Dyke, pastor of the Aledo Presbyterian church
officiated, assisted by Rev. Allen Eastland of the Viola Methodist
church. Interment was in Viola cemetery, under the direction of Luther Davis.
The service of song was by Mrs. Verie Langford at the organ; and
Miss Rose Tary, who sang "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be."
Pallbearers were Edmond Morris, William Morris, Don Mack, Otis
Mack, Willard Dowsett and Orville Peterson.
Mr. Stancliff died Saturday morning at his home at the edge of
Viola. He had been in ill health for some time.
Greene Native
He was born Dec. 26, 1873, southwest of Viola. He had resided all
his life in Greene township, and was a graduate of Viola high school. On
Feb. 20, 1901, he married Miss Mae Gillen at Norwood Presbyterian
church, and they observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1951.
Extremely active in community and county affairs, Mr. Stancliff was a
member of the Mercer county Farm Bureau, and served on the membership
committee, as well as being an early proponent of soil conservation. He
was a precinct committeeman of the Democratic party. * * *
A director for many years of the Mercer county fair board. Mr.
Stancliff also served a quarter-century on the Viola school boards. * * *
From the time he first entered the farming profession, he was
active in raising purebred Duroc Jersey hogs., and was also engaged in
producing and distributing hybrid seed corn.
His collection of antique furniture and accessories numbered several
hundred pieces, and he dealt with fellow collectors in many states.
Mr. Stancliff was a member of the Presbyterian church of Aledo.
Surviving are the widow; one son, Glen Stancliff of Aledo, who is
assistant county superintendent of schools; two grandsons, and a sister,
Mrs. Sue Goding of Lower Lake, Calif.
