Cornelius Sullivan
The death of Cornelius Sullivan took from the community
another pioneer, one who had resided in Adams and Taylor counties since
the year 1876. Mr. Sullivan had been ailing for some time but was not
seriously ill until two weeks ago. He passed away Saturday, December 31,
1932, at his home in southwest Corning. Funeral services were held
Tuesday morning at 10:00 a. m., at the St. Patrick's Catholic church
with Rev. Father Powers in charge of the services. Interment was made in
Calvary cemetery.
Cornelius Sullivan, son of Timothy and Nora Sullivan was born in
Boston, Mass., July 4, 1850, and died December 31, 1932, at the age of
82 years, 5 months and 27 days. When twelve years old he came to
Fairfield, Iowa, with his family. In 1876 he came to Taylor county and
on November 18, 1883, he was married to Catherine Cecilia Cashman, they
being the first couple to be married in the old St. Patrick's church. To
this union seven children were born. Timothy died a number of years ago.
The living children are Arthur, of Chinook, Montana; Mrs. Mary Cotter;
Mrs. Nora Colgan; Nellie Sullivan; and Eugene Sullivan, of this
vicinity; and Mrs. Winifred McNally, of Council Bluffs, Iowa. One
sister, Mrs. Ellen Sheehy, of Searsboro, Iowa, and a brother, Timothy,
of Alliance, Nebr., also survive. All of the children were here except
Arthur. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Conn and daughter, Mildred, of Newton, Iowa,
and James McGuire, of Spring Valley, Ill., were present for the funeral.
Mrs. Conn is a niece and Mr. McGuire a nephew.
Mr. Sullivan was a citizen of the finest type. His life had been
spent in an effort to build up the community and honesty and integrity
stand out as fundamental characteristics recognized by all who knew him.
