Injuries Fatal to Bernard E. Swift
Third Victim of Bus-Car Crash Plan for Funeral
Arylus Larson, Also injured in Crash Near Ankeny, Still in Critical Condition
Private Bernard Swift, who was injured in a collision between
a bus and an automobile north of Des Moines early Monday morning, died
at 6:30 yesterday evening in the hospital at Fort Des Moines, to which
he was taken following the accident.
He had been in critical condition since the accident, although
reports on Monday were that he had a fair chance to recover. He had a
blood transfusion and was operated on for internal injuries.
Girl Still Unconscious
Arylus Larson, 17, another of the four Washington young people in
the automobile at the time of the collision, remains in a very critical
condition at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines. She sustained a
fractured skull and was still unconscious.
Funeral services are being held this afternoon for William Louis
Spenler, 17, who was killed instantly in the crash, and Anna Darlene
Lukavasky, 18, who died a short time later in a Des Moines hospital.
The accident occurred when Private Swift was being taken to the
army air base at Sioux Falls, S. D. after furlough at home. He and Louis
Spealer were cousins, and the trip was being made in the Swift car,
which Spealer planed to drive back home with the two girls.
In Army Since Dec. 11
Bernard Erwin Swift was inducted into the army at Camp Dodge Dec.
11, 1943, and was serving in the air corps.
He was a son of Bryan Swift and Ethel (Caldwell) Swift, and was
born Oct. 19, 1920, in this community. He attended the country schools
and Washington high school, from which he was graduated. He had been
working on a farm before entering the army. He attended the Washington
Church of Christ.
Twelve Brothers, Sisters
Besides his parents who live five miles southeast of Washington,
he is survived by twelve brothers and sisters, two of whom are in the
army. Word from them is awaited before final plans are made for the
funeral. Arrangements are in charge of the L. A. Jones funeral home.
The brothers and sisters are Lawrence Arnold Swift, Mrs. Esther
Houseal, Private George Everett Swift of Harding Field, La., Private
Charles Edwin Swift of Camp Wheeler, Ga., Marian Arthur, Doris Winifred,
Erma Joan, Wanda Cathryne, Edith Maxine, William Earl, Martha Ann and
Annetta Marlo. His maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Caldwell of
Washington, also survive.
