Mrs. James Swift Dies in Rock Island
Mrs. James Swift, former Washington resident who had made her
home with her daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Mahin of Rock Island, Ill., for the
past six years, died today, July 25, 1961, in St. Anthony's Hospital in Rock Island.
Mrs. Swift was 91 years old. She had been seriously ill for five weeks
and failing in health for four years.
Funeral arrangements were indefinite today. The Rev. Vernon Elgin
will be in charge, and burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. Jones
Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Etta Lindsay was born Aug. 3, 1869 in Washington County, a
daughter of Rowland B. and Martha Wilson Lindsey. She was reared and
educated here and married Jan. 19, 1887 to James Swift. They lived on a
farm three miles southeast of Washington for many years. He died Jan. 31, 1939.
She was a charter member of the Independent Club and Harmony
Club; a member of the Golden Age Club and the Three-Quarter Century
Club; the Legion Auxiliary.
Mrs. Swift was a member of the Marion Avenue United Presbyterian
Church and held a lifetime membership in the afternoon division of the
Women's Missionary Society.
Survivors include a son, Lloyd of Washington; one daughter, Mrs.
R. N. Mahin of Rock Island; one granddaughter and two great grandchildren.
