Arthur Swift dies here today; rites Saturday
Arthur Swift, 77, retired telephone company employee of
Washington, died this morning, April 6, 1978 at the Washington County
Hospital after being ill the past month.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Jones Funeral Home
with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Rev. Velman Luse will conduct the funeral rites.
Mr. Swift had started working for what is now General Telephone
Company in 1933. He retired in 1965 after serving as a telephone lineman
and foreman of the line crew for several years. In 1955-56, he was
construction foreman of the company for the state of Iowa. He was a
member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge and the
Communications Workers of America.
Mr. Swift was born near Havre in Washington County Oct. 5, 1900.
A son of George and Alvilla Lindsey Swift, he attended schools here, was
a member of the championship football team at Washington High School and
graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, Mo.
He married Mary Marguerite Reister May 14, 1938. She died July 3, 1974.
He served with the Seabees in World War II and was a member of
the American Legion.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Carl (Ruth) Schneider and Mrs.
Dale (Gertrude) Darbyshire and a half-sister, Mrs. Wilbur (Louise)
Harter, all of Washington; and a number of nieces and nephews.
His wife, two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
