John Terlisner, Prominent Arcadia Business Man, Dies
Funeral Services Held Tuesday Morning from St. John's Church.
The town of Arcadia mourns the death of one of its prominent
business men, John Terlisner, who died at his home at Arcadia at 4:15
o'clock Saturday, December 1. Mr. Terlisner had been in failing health
for three months, suffering from a form of heart trouble. Most of the
time he was. able to be about, however, and was in Carroll a few days
before his final illness, which was of a week's duration.
John Terlisner was born at Arcadia August 31, 1877, the son of
Mr. and Mrs. George Terlisner, both deceased. He attended the public and
parochial schools of Arcadia and at a young age left for Worthington, Ia.,
to learn the harness trade. In 1898 he returned to Arcadia and bought
the harness business of William Rose. This business grew with the
passing of years and as changes came new lines were added. At the time
of his death he was conducting a large business in dry goods, harness
and a shoe shop.
Mr. Terlisner was married at Arcadia November 27, 1899, to Miss
Josephine Berens. Five boys and two daughters were born to them, all of
whom are living with the exception of Victor, who died at the age of
five years. The children are Frank of Wall Lake; Arthur, Dayton, O.;
Lawrence, Carroll, Ia.; Louis, Anna and Lucilla, at home.
John Terlisner was one of the outstanding men of his community.
He was one of those substantial, earnest men, to whom others looked for
advice and guidance. He was a devout Christian, a member of the St.
John's Catholic church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus
and was a Grand Knight in this order.
Mr. Terlisner was greatly interested in the United Commercial
Travelers, to which organization he belonged. He was the type of man,
who deserved the best of life. A substantial, friendly man with a love
for mankind and a success in the business world, he will be greatly
missed in his home and his community.
Besides his wife and children he is survived by two brothers and
two sisters, Theodore Terlisner of Arcadia, Henry Terlisner of Carroll,
Mrs. William Roth of Templeton and Mrs. John Gerken of Arcadia. He is
also survived by three grandchildren.
Funeral services held at St. John's church, Arcadia, Tuesday
