Obituary of Frank Thorpe
Francis Marion Thorpe was born December 5, 1862, at Buffalo
Heart, Illinois, and passed away at Cherokee, Iowa, on March 2, 1943, at
the age of 80 years, 2 months and 25 days.
He was the only son and the oldest child of a family of five children
born to Sanford and Julia Hall Thorpe. He came with his parents from
Marshalltown to Sac county in 1877 living continuously in and around
Early until the fall of 1940, when he was quite ill and was taken to the
Carroll hospital where he received care and treatment for three weeks
and was later taken to the Cherokee hospital where he gradually failed.
On Saturday, Feb. 27, his condition became serious and his family was
called at once but he did not recognize any of them and continued to
weaken until the end came on Tuesday night.
Mr. Thorpe was married in 1885 to Miss Thressa Schneider and to
them 4 daughters and 6 sons were born. One daughter Eva, died at the age
of 3 months, and Agnes (Mrs. Fred Christianson) in 1918. His wife
preceded him in death in 1928. Those surviving are: Mae (Mrs. J. D.
Level), of Dallas, Texas, Lillie (Mrs. J. J. Adams) of Schaller, and all
six sons, Merrill of Lake View, Lee of Storm Lake, Lyle of Des Moines,
Francis of Carnarvon, Roland of Comanche, Ia., and Lamont of Winterset,
one sister, Mrs. Mary Schneider, of Early, 25 grandchildren, nine great
grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Five grandsons are in the United States armed forces, two in the
army, two in the marines, and one in the air corps.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the
Presbyterian church with Rev. W. L. Tillman officiating. Burial was in
the family lot in the Early cemetery. Chris Lens, Oran LaGrange, D. H.
Nellis, Julius Schramm, Frank Toomer and Bert Mendenhall acted as pallbearers.
All of the children except Mrs. Level and all the in-laws except
Mr. Level and Mrs. Lamont Thorpe attended the funeral. Also, Mr. and
Mrs. Ervin Thorpe of Lake View, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Adams of Ft. Riley,
Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Christianson of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs.
Jesse Sorenson of Storm Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Sanders and C. W.
Sanders of Nemaha, and Mrs. Del Wolford of Auburn.

Funeral Services Held at Early For F. M. Thorpe

Early - Francis Marion Thorpe, only son and oldest of a family
of five children was born to Sanford and Julia Hall Thorpe at Buffalo
Heart, Sangiman, Co., Il., December 5, 1943 at the age of 80 years, 2
months, and 25 days. When a small child he moved with his parents to
Marshalltown and in 1877 came with them to Sac County, where he has
since made his home. He has seen the great improvements and progress of
the community. For years he followed the profession of farming and that
of well drilling. He was united in marriage in 1885 to Miss Theresa
Schneider and to this union 10 children were born. One daughter Eva died
at the age of three months, Agnes (Mrs. Fred Christionson) in 1918, and
his wife preceded him in 1928.
Surviving him are two daughter, Mae (Mrs. J. D. Level) of Dallas,
Texas, Lillie (Mrs. J. J. Adams) of Schaller; and six sons: Merrill of
Lake View, Lee of Storm Lake, Lyle of Des Moines, Roland of Comanche,
and Lamont of Winterset. One sister Mrs. Mary Schneider of Early, 25
grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Since the death of his wife, Mr. Thorpe has lived alone or with
relatives until November, 1940 when his health was such that he was
taken to Carroll hospital where he received care and treatments for
three weeks, he was later taken to Cherokee Hospital where he continued
to fail. Saturday, week ago, he became critically ill and his relatives
were called but he did not recognize them. Death released him of his
illness on Tuesday night. The entire family with exception of Mrs.
Lamont Thorpe and Mr. and Mrs. Level were present at the funeral. Other
relatives were Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Thorpe of Lake View, Mr. and Mrs.
Gerald Adams of Ft. Riley, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Christianson of
Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Sorenson, Storm Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey
Sanders, Nemaha, C. W. Sanders, Nemaha, Mrs. Del Wolford, Auburn and
relatives from Early.
Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church in Early
with Rev. Tillman officiating and interment was in the Early Union
Cemetary with Chris Lenz, Oren LaGrange, D. D. Nellis, Julius Schramm,
Frank Toomer and Bert Mendenhall pall bearers.

Frank Thorp, 80, Dies in Cherokee; Funeral Friday
Funeral services for Frank Thorpe, 80 year old Sac County
resident, will be held in the First Presbyterian Church at Early on
Friday at 2:00 p. m. Rev. Tillman will preach the funeral sermon.
Mr. Thorpe has been a resident of Sac County for more than 69
years. He died in a Cherokee hospital Tuesday evening. The body is at
the Neal Funeral Home, awaiting the service Friday.
Remaining to mourn his departure are 8 living children, 25 grandchildren
and 9 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Thorpe passed away in 1928.
Burial will be made in the cemetery at Early.
