Sherman Thorpe
Sherman Edgar Thorpe was born July 18, 1920, in Lake View,
Iowa, to Merrill and Emma Jean (Taubman) Thorpe. He graduated from Lake
View High School in 1940. At that time he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and
served in World War II until 1943. In 1950 he reenlisted and served in
the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. He served as a
Machinist Mate-2nd Class. Upon returning home, he drove his own truck
for Lake View Concrete and Tile Company until his retirement in 1982.
On November 13, 1955, Sherm was married in Maryville, MO, to June
D. McFarland of Odebolt.
Sherm served on the Lake View City council for several terms
prior to his retirement. He also enjoyed restoring Model A and Model
T's; he took great pride in his cars.
Sherman passed away on May 31, 2005, at the Black Hawk Life Care
Center in Lake View. He was preceded in death by his wife June; his
parents, Merrill and Emma Jean Thorpe; brother Ervin Thorpe; and sister
Genevieve Reinart.
Seven nieces and nephews and many friends survive him.
Funeral services for Sherman Thorpe will be held Friday, June
3rd, 10:30 a.m., at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View
with Reverend Rick Johnson officiating. Burial will be at the Early
Union Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Lake View American
Legion Eilert-Auen Post No. 133.
Visitation is Thursday, June 2nd, 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
