Elizabeth "Betty" Tigges

Carroll

  Mass of the Christian burial for Elizabeth "Betty" Tigges of Carroll will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll.
  Mrs. Tigges, 103, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, at Carroll Health Center nursing home in Carroll.
  The Revs. James McCormick, James Tigges and Robert Gralapp will concelebrate the Mass. Lector will be Mrs. Tigges' daughter, Rosalie Davis. Gift bearers will be daughters: Ruth Ann Tigges, Carolyn Sovich and Mary Jane Schenkelberg. Servers will be Jay, Josh, and Katie Tigges. Eucharistic ministers will be Mary Jane and Morrie Schenkelberg. Pianist will be a granddaughter, Anne Tigges. Soloists will be grandchildren: Kristie and Marty Tigges.
  Casket bearers will be grandsons: Brian Tigges, Mark Tigges, Greg Tigges, Frank Sovich II, Paul Davis and Patrick Tigges. Honorary casket bearers will be granddaughters: Jacie Sander, Kristie Tigges, Shelly Schreck, Beth Hersch and Diane Devine. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 a.m.
  Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery at Carroll.
  Visitation starts at 2:30 and the Legion of Mary will lead a rosary at 3 Sunday afternoon at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. Holy Spirit Parish will hold a Christian wake service at 7 Sunday night at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to Holy Spirit Parish or Blue Cloud Abbey of Marvin, S.D.
  A daughter of William and Anna (Kruse) Scharfenkamp, she was born March 17, 1904, at Carroll, attended Sts. Peter and Paul Grade School at Carroll and spent most of her life in the community.
  She worked at St. Mary College in Winona, Minn., in 1926-27.
  She and Alphonse Tigges were married April 30, 1929, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll with the Rev. Lambert Schenkelberg officiating.
  The Tiggeses farmed southeast of Carroll until 1959, when they retired and moved to Carroll. Mrs. Tigges worked for the Sts. Peter and Paul School hot -lunch program for two years then the dietary department of St. Anthony Hospital for 19 years.
  She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and Ladies Guild and the Legion of Mary. She enjoyed praying and baking.
  Survivors include four daughters: Ruth Ann Tigges of Manilla, Carolyn Sovich and husband Frank of Ormond Beach, Fla., Mary Jane Schenkelberg and husband Morrie of Sioux City and Rosalie Davis of Omaha, Neb.; three sons: Donald Tigges and wife Mary of Carroll, Walter Tigges and wife Velma of Carroll and Jerry Tigges and wife Mary K. of Carroll; 27 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Louise Friedman, of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother-in-law, James Collison, of Carroll; and a sister-in-law, Susan Hackfort, of Omaha.
  Mrs. Tigges was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alphonse, in December 1987; a granddaughter, Diane Venner; a great-granddaughter, Sara Siepker; six sisters: Gertrude Simons, Dora Tyrrell, Anna Engelen, Catherine Anthofer, Mary Simons and Barbara Tigges; six brothers: Herman, William, John and Joe Scharfenkamp, and Peter and Anthony Scharfenkamp in infancy.
