John Toohey

  The community in Douglas township which had known John Toohey for the past fifty-three years, was deeply saddened Monday when it found that he had succumbed to the disease cancer of the stomach which had menaced his life for the past year. For the past seven weeks he had been bedfast and a patient suffer through all the discomforts and pains incident to the disease. Monday evening at 6 p. m. he passed away on the farm which had been his home for fifty-three years. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10 a. m. at the St. Patrick's Catholic church in Corning, conducted by Rev. Father Powers and interment was made in Calvary cemetery. The body lay in state at the Hilliard Funeral Home from 8 a.m. until 10 a. m. preceding the funeral.
  John Toohey, son of Patrick and Johanna Toohey, was born Feb. 23, 1864 at Sterling, Ill. and died July 27, 1931 at the age of 67 years, 5 months and 4 days. February 12, 1896 he was married to Belle Narrigon who survives him. He is also survived by his brothers, M. J. and J. P. Toohey of Sterling, Nebraska. J. P., his twin brother was at his bedside, but the elder brother, M. J. Toohey was not physically able to make the trip. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. William Devereaux of Corning and Mrs. Emma Haus of Chicago; and a number of nieces and nephews.
  Mr. Toohey was a member of the Catholic church and lived true to his faith. He was a gentleman of fine principles and is mourned by many relatives and a host of friends who extend sympathy to the immediate family.
