Merle Vastine
DAVENPORT — Funeral Services and Mass of Christian burial
for Merle D. Vastine, Sr. will be 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, 2009, at
St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 2618 Boies Ave., Davenport. Burial will
be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on
Wednesday at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, where
the family invites you to join them in a prayer service at 4:30 p.m.
Merle died Monday, March 2, 2009, at Genesis West Medical Center
after a brief illness surrounded by his loving family. He was born
January 7, 1912, in Richland, Iowa, the son of Byron and Teresa (Swift)
Vastine. He was united in marriage to Veronica Hild in 1932 in
Muscatine, Iowa, she preceded in death.
Merle retired in 1974 from International Harvester Company,
Farmall Plant, Rock Island. He was employed as an assembler. His
memberships include St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Farmall Retirees Club
and Local 1309. Merle enjoyed attending auctions and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan,
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Alphonsus
Catholic Church or the Kahl Home for the Aged
Survivors include his daughters, Marilyn “Jean ” Mueller,
Bettendorf, Patricia (David) Murphy-Bruch, Bettendorf, and a son Merle
D. “Mick” (Pat) Vastine Jr., Davenport; 16 grandchildren, 38 great
grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Marie Vastine,
2004, grandson Charlie Murphy, 1987, great great grandson, Austin
Campbell, 1990, a sister Marian Vastine and a brother Cedric Vastine.
May they rest in peace.
