Walter Verplaetse
Walter Verplaetse, 78, of Viola died Sunday, March 26, 2006,
at his home.
Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's
Catholic Church, Viola. Burial is in St. John's Cemetery, Viola.
Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dennison Funeral Home, Viola.
Memorials may be made to St. John's Catholic Church.
He was born Dec. 3, 1927, in Moline, the son of Maurice and Marie
(DeGrave) Verplaetse. He married Patsy R. Kellum March 11, 1948, at St.
Mary's Church, East Moline.
Walt owned Verplaetse Excavating Co. for more than 46 years,
semi-retiring in 1998. The business is now being managed by his
children, Randall, Ken, Annette and Wayne.
He served in the Army during World War II from 1946-1948,
stationed in the Philippines. He enjoyed farming.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Viola, where he
was a former parish council member and trustee.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Verplaetse, Viola; two
daughters and son-in-law, Lynn Carlton, Seaton, and Annette and Kirk
Doonan, Viola; five sons and daughters-in-law, Randall Verplaetse,
Barstow, Scott and Cheri Verplaetse, Harleton, Texas, Ken Verplaetse,
Matherville, Wayne and Angie Verplaetse, Viola, and Robert Verplaetse,
Davenport; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters,
Dorothy DeBo, Hobe Sound, Fla., Marion Plogh, Bethlehem, Ga., and Alice
Hawkins, East Moline. He was preceded in death by his parents;
son-in-law, George Carlton; infant grandson, Adam Verplaetse; and an
infant brother.
