James Wachtel
James R. "Jamie" Wachtel, 78, of Geneseo, died
Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Hammond-Henry Hospital Geneseo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec.
20, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo. Father Michael Pakula
will celebrate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Visitation
will be 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, where a
rosary will be recited at 6:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to the James
R. Wachtel Memorial Fund for a scholarship to be established.
Jamie was born June 18, 1927, in Geneseo, son of John and Emma
Fritch Wachtel. He was a 1945 graduate of Geneseo High School. He served
his country in the Merchant Marines. He married Virginia Vandemore June
25, 1947, in St. Malachy's Church, Geneseo.
He was an insurance agent for the Prudential Insurance Co. for 40 years,
retiring in 1988. He later worked part time at the True Value Hardware
store in Geneseo and Quinn hardware store in Hampton.
Jamie was a member of St. Malachy's Catholic Church, Geneseo. He
was a charter member of the Geneseo Grid Club, where he served as
secretary/treasurer for more than 30 years. He was past member of the
Geneseo Kiwanis Club, where he served as president; the Geneseo Rotary
Club; and the Geneseo City Council, where, as a alderman, he was
instrumental in the city's purchase of the land that is Richmond Hill
Park. Jamie served on the Geneseo Utility Board for many years and was
active in Geneseo Little League Football program, where he coached the
Rams for 15 years. He was an avid Green Machine and Chicago White Sox fan.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; five sons and their wives,
Robert and Mary Wachtel, Geneseo, Thomas and Alana Wachtel, Geneseo,
Michael and Becky Wachtel, Clive, Iowa, Timothy and Mona Wachtel,
Keithsville, La., Jeffrey and LuAnn Wachtel, Hilton Head, S.C.; 10
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Ann Green,
Geneseo. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Sue; his parents;
and two brothers, Joe and Francis.
