James Whalen
Died in Council Bluffs.
James Whalen, for many years a resident of Corning, passed
from this life Friday morning, October 19, 1917 at St. Bernard's
hospital in Council Bluffs. The body was brought to Corning Saturday
morning and the funeral services were held at the St. Patrick Catholic
church Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Father Richard
Dollard. Interment was made in Calvary cemetery.
Mr. Whalen was born in Ireland. He was about 78 years of age at
the time of his death. About forty years ago, Mr. Whalen came to Adams
county, Iowa, and located on a farm which he purchased in Mercer
township. He lived on the farm for a number of years, later retiring
from the active duties of life and locating in Corning which was his
home for many years. He made his home at the Victoria hotel for a long
time and later at the Heaton rooming house, where he remained until
about two weeks ago, when he was taken to Council Bluffs for treatment.
For some time Mr. Whalen had been in poor health and M. M. Quinn had
been appointed his guardian, and Gus Allen cared for him for some
months. Mr. Whalen was quite alone in the world, having no relative near
him during his last days. We understand Mrs. Burnett, of Creston, is a
niece of Mr. Whalen, and as far as he knew he had no other relative
living. He will be missed by many friends.
