John H. Wheelan, 94, dies Tuesday
John H. Wheelan, 94, of 1015 S. Iowa Ave. died Tuesday
evening, May 10, 1983, at Washington County Hospital. He had been
seriously ill for the past month.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. James
Catholic Church, Washington. The Rev. John Whalen will officiate with
burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Visitation will begin this evening at
Jones Funeral Home, Washington. The family will receive friends from
7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home where a prayer service will be
conducted at 8:30 p.m. that evening.
John Henry Wheelan was born March 2, 1889, in Seaton, Ill., the
son of Thomas and Susan Duffy Wheelan. He attended Seaton (Ill.) High
School and was a graduate of St. Ambrose College in Davenport. On Feb.
18, 1914, he married Martha Veronica Swift, who preceded him in death on
Oct. 27, 1979, at Washington.
A resident of the county for most of his life, Mr. Wheelan farmed
in the Washington area for 60 years. The Wheelans moved to Washington in
1967. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a charter member
of the local Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include two sons, Mike Wheelan of Washington and Donald
J. Wheelan of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two daughters, Mrs. Bernard (Esther)
Blaine of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Robert (Roberta) Clark of
Arenzville, Ill.; 19 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two
brothers, Frank Wheelan of San Antonio, Texas, and Clarence Wheelan of
Lafayette, La.; and one sister, Mrs. Rose Shockley of Ludington, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Wheelan, and one sister.
