Mrs. John Wheelan, 92, dies Saturday evening
Mrs. John H. Wheelan, 92, of 1015 South Iowa Avenue, in
Washington, died Saturday evening, Oct. 27, 1979 at the Washington
County Hospital. She had not been well for some time.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. James Catholic
Church with the Rev. Edward J. Shepherd in charge. Rosary will be Monday
at 7:30 p.m. in the Jones Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Wheelan was born at Ainsworth March 4, 1887. Martha Veronica
Swift was the daughter of John C. and Mary Rimmer Swift. She was raised
in this county and married here Feb. 18, 1914 to John H. Wheelan. They
farmed near Washington until moving to town in 1967. She was a member of
St. James Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic
Daughters of America, St. Anthony Circle and Harmony Club. Mrs. Wheelan
had worked as a telephone operator prior to her marriage.
Surviving are her husband; four children: Mrs. Bernard (Esther)
Blaine of Kansas City, Mo., Donald of Oklahoma City, Okla., Mrs. Robert
(Roberta) Clark of Arenzville, Ill., and Mike Wheelan of Washington; 19
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. L.G. (Martina)
Bailey of Davenport; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Twelve brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Wheelan. -- Funeral Mass for Martha V. Wheelan was held
Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church with Father Edward J. Shepherd
celebrant. Casketbearers were John C. Clark, Jeffrey Clark, Phil Leyden,
Dan Wheelan, Mike Kurtz and John Bailey. Burial was in Elm Grove
Cemetery. Jones Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
