Whitcher Rites Held Tuesday
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, June 15, in First
Methodist church for Mrs. Lulu Whitcher, 80, who died Saturday at Palmer
Memorial hospital. Rev. E. E. Basye officiated at the 10:30 a.m.
services, with Burnham-Wood funeral home in charge of the arrangements.
Interment was in the West Union cemetery with Charles Kelsey,
Charles Antes, Ross Whitcher, Floyd Whitcher, Don Iliff, West Union, and
Bill Feller, St. Olaf, as casket bearers.
Lulu Lynn Crew, daughter of Oliver K. and Harriet E. Crew, was
born March 16, 1884, in Linn county. She was married to Milton L.
Whitcher, April 16, 1913, at Independence. They became the parents of
one daughter.
Mr. and Mrs. Whitcher moved to the West Union vicinity following
their marriage and engaged in farming until 1931, when they moved to
town. A long-time member of the First Methodist church, she was active
in the Woman's Society of Christian Service, Sunday school, worship
services and prayer group as well as an active member of the Eastern
Star and Rebekah lodges.
Preceding her in death are her husband, parents and one sister.
Survivors include one daughter, Marvel, Mrs. Lowell S. Buchanan,
and a granddaughter, Barbara, Cedar Rapids; three sisters, Ora, Mrs. S.
S. Barkley, Fullerton, Calif.; Bertha, Mrs. John Heald, Edmonds, Wsh.,
and Olive, Mrs. Hobart Pierce, Sac City; three brothers, Cecil Crew,
Fullerton, Calif.; Roy Crew, Waterloo and Ray Crew, Independence
