Creative Writing I
On-line Course
Part III ~ Background Reading
In this part, you
will do some background reading that will help you formulate some
opinions about the elements of creative writing.
Section A -- Bring in 5 examples of written passages you find to be
particularly creative. It would be best to make copies from books
or magazines so you can place them in your notebook. Write a
journal for each passage, pointing out specific concepts, imagery, or
word usage that demonstrate this creativity. (20 points each
excerpt, 100 points total)
Section B -- Select 20 excerpts from the Master Notebook of Literary Samples, from Literature: the Human Experience by Abcarian and Klotz, or from Fiction 100
by Pickering (on Mr . Woody's Creative Writing Bookshelf). Study
each excerpt as you read it, making notes about the techniques the
author uses to make the composition interesting. On some
excerpts, you may find notes that ask you to think about certain
aspects of the story as you read. Be sure to address these as you
evaluate the story. Write a journal for each one that summarizes
your understanding of the question, "Why is this composition a good
example of creative writing?" (20 point each, 400 points total)
