George Romero! The name alone
generally peaks interest from the casual horror movie go-er and even the
hardcore at heart. Personally I think he’s over rated but that’s just my
opinion. Sure he gave us one of the most beautiful cinematic pieces in
history as well as something original in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and I’ll
even go as far as referring to DAWN OF THE DEAD, but that’s where it should
have stopped. Anything after that has been pure garbage. Boring rehashed
crapola., i.e. Day of the Dead. Then we get to the movie at hand LAND OF THE
DEAD. Even the title says it all. Land of the DEAD!!! This series should be
put to rest. Enough of the whining, let’s get to the story and you’ll
understand.
In LAND OF THE DEAD the world is
full of zombies and the survivors have barricaded themselves inside a walled
city to keep out the living dead. As the wealthy hide out in skyscrapers and
chaos rules the streets, the rest of the survivors must find a way to stop
the evolving zombies from breaking into the city. Ruled ruled by the
egotistical ass Kaufman (Dennis Hopper), the upper class has the usual
privileges living in a fancy well-supplied building, while the poor people
lives on the streets. Even then. When the world is shit the poor still get
stepped on. These cats named Riley (Simon Baker) and Cholo (John Leguizamo)
belong to a team that brings supplies (food, medicine etc.) to the city
using a heavy truck called Dead Reckoning and designed by Riley. When Cholo
is betrayed by Kaufman, he steals the Dead Reckoning and threatens Kaufman,
who requests Riley to retrieve the vehicle, with the support of his friend
Charlie (Robert Joy) and Slack (Asia Argento). But the dead are smarter and
organized under the leadership of Big Daddy (Eugene Clark).
Things aren’t that simple
however, the humans strive to survive, while outside the zombies are
steadily evolving. Those who walk beyond the walls of the city slowly
develop new abilites and become a much greater threat to humankind. In LAND
OF THE DEAD the zombies show sings of emotions and friendship. The ending
says it all people. Loaded with an excellent choice of cast LAND OF THE DEAD
is still crap. The story was lame and never really flowed. The effects on
the zombies were great and there was plenty of blood to appease, yet the
plot just doesn’t do it for me. It’s such a shame Romero being who he is
still gives us this shit. I’m disappointed.
Avoid this!
