Muffy:
or a Transmigration of Selves
By.
S.T. Gulik

Upon receiving this book, I was dazzled by the cover. I thought, “Oh cool,
it’s pink!” and admired the abstract cover art, assuming I would be treated
to a fantasy-themed story. I then flipped it over to see a giant cockroach
on the back cover, which inspired an instant “What the fuck?” reaction. Just
this visual clash alone reaffirmed my desire to read this particular novel,
which I knew nothing about.
The
Disclaimer itself deserves its own paragraph. I felt as if I were truly
hearing the words and personal views on society directly from the author,
and I gotta say, the man has some damn fine points…Even though I hadn’t
started to read the fiction yet! I fully agree when Gulik says, “If you go
into this novel with the wrong mindset it would be quite easy to miss the
point entirely.” Let it also be said that this book is certainly not for
children or the faint of heart.
After years of sexual
abuse from her father, 14 year old Muffy leaves her home in search of a new
sex partner…Anyone but her father. The next thing she knows, she’s been
kidnapped and held hostage…and she likes it! What ensues over the next 3
years is a whirlwind of love, kink, sado-masochism, torture, murder,
insanity, and artistic vision that keeps your eyes glued page after page
until it is devoured.
Muffy is a
beautifully grotesque story that offers a disturbing, yet humorous peek into
many subjects that most would deem “taboo” and turn away from. If there was
ever a device made to force society to confront all of the dirty little
secrets and “what ifs” (and for those who wish they had them), then this
book is IT. I think the author pretty much sums it up when he says, “The
world is fucked up, now deal with it.” This novel is designed to drive you
out of your comfort zone. It will shock you. It will offend you. It will
make you think about things you normally wouldn’t or shouldn’t…And then, it
will touch you.
