Overview and DNA Analysis

The Lines in this section have a common ancestor.

Comment revised 11/13/08

After considerable discussion and review of the Y-DNA results for the lines of Thomas Felps of Baltimore Co, MD;  Thomas Phelps d 1751 Albemarle VA; and James Phelps d 1786 Caswell Co, VA;, one Creed line; and the Pond lines (now confirmed by two tests but now removed to the Pond YDNA Project), it is evident from statistical data provided by FTDNA that they all share a common ancestor in relatively recent history.  This conclusion is quite remarkable considering countless hours of research over the years were not able to arrive at that conclusion using paper trails.  We should all congratulate ourselves for a true breakthrough!!

Nov 13, 2008:  All kits that matched these lines all have dual Y-DNA values of 19 and 20 at DSYS marker #448.  The value to report was chosen by Familytreedna to be 20.  This anomaly is found in all the Phelps/Felps on this page.

Halpogroup:  As the search for the country of origin of these lines continues, we must keep in mind that we and our common ancestor had a rather rare haplogroup of E1a   You can see the your detailed FTDNA information by logging on to FTDNA, clicking "YDNA Haplogroup",  then clicking  the down arrow at "View Haplogroup information" and choosing "Haplogroup migration"   You will see a map of haplogroup locations and most importantly the note  "This haplogroup is restricted to Africa where it is seen in intermediate frequencies  It is less common than its "brother" lineage E1b1a..."

Since enough members were specifically haplogroup tested and found to be  E1a  FTDNA now shows E1a for most of these related members.  Therefore, the search for a relatively recent origin - not  tens of thousands of years ago-  in Africa cannot be ignored.  Of the extremely small number of E1a's at FTDNA, most that I personally contacted reported an African-American ancestry.  Yet none of them had triangulated with multiple YDNA tests using paper trails, therefore the earliest known paternal ancestor was not proven as we have done here.

Pond Surname matches: With the matching YDNA results of  two Pond tests they are beginning to firm up the proof of their ancestry. The match these three major Phelps lines.   It is important to note that the Ponds are matching just as well as some of the Phelps of these Phelps lines - and even better in some cases. One implication is that a Pond could have been the common ancestor of all. Another possibility, more likely perhaps, is that a son of James Phelps was the father of a Pond son in Caswell Co, NC  (see the report at the articles link on the home page.)  NOTE: The Pond members have moved to the Pond YDNA Project..
