Cuthbert Phelps/Phelpes/Phelpe b. est by 1630, probably England - moved to Tyrrell Co, NC
This Cuthbert Phelps line below is the possible ancestor of the several dna-tested Phelps with origins in Tyrrell. This hypothesis is very tentative and much more remains to be done on the paper trail and dna research. The line below was submitted by W. H Freeman who likely is a descendant, with assistance by Douglas K. Phelps, to help in the study. We invite others to contribute primary source material for corrections or to add to the descendants. Contact the project adm.
2. Darby Phelps b. 11 Feb 1656/7, Kent (Talbot), Md . In Tyrrell by 1716., d. Tyrrell Co, NC
2 . Edward Phelps b. 8 Jan 1658/9 Kent (Talbot), Md. In Tyrrell by 1704., d. Tyrrell Co, NC m. Frances
2. Bartholomew Phelps Listed as a NC importation, 1694. In Tyrrell by 1703. d. Tyrrell Co, NC m. Elizabeth
A common ancestor of five Phelps, with origins in Tyrrell Co, NC:
William Phelps b 1773 #43412 , Zadock Phelps b ca 1760 #71005 , Asa Phelps b 1810 #77645 , Silas M. Phelps b 1814, TN. #94034, 517, and Micajah Phelps b ca 1805, 100136 match this line.
Based on papertrails and probabilites of these kits it is likely that the common ancestor lived in eastern NC in the mid 1700s. (See the light blue link below.) More tests from other distantly related Phelps will be very helpful.
It is extremely important that each kit be certain of their papertrails since an error would be very misleading. As of 11/2007 the kit owners have confirmed their research using primary sources in most cases. Additional research is being done, especially for those items highlighted in yellow.
Each kit in this group should log on to FTDNA and
carefully study their matching Y-DNA hits. For each match using the
highest markers for the match, click the FTDNAtip "report" which is a blue and
red icon
to the right of the
matching kit. For each imperfect match (at the
highest level), study the results and enter a new value where it reads "did
not share a common ancestor in the last
generation(s).
If you know for certain that there was no common ancestor in the last 3
generations, for example, enter a 3. That will change the probability of the
time to a common ancestor.
Comments (12/2007) With no paper trails to link to a common ancestor, we could offer some conclusions based on the dna results:
The most often seen marker values, the modal, might be considered to be the values of the common ancestor, or at least the common ancestor of the three kits 43412, 71005 and 94034.
Since kit 100136 and 77645 have identical marker values and miss the modal by a genetic distance of by only 1, we can conclude that these two lines are tightly related and perhaps descended from a common ancestor through his different sons. Or one of them descended from the other. In other words, their unique CDYa marker value of 40 will always be in their descendant lines.
The first table is as of 4/9/2008, the others are of Dec 21, 2007
The first row of the first table indicates the mutations of each kit to the modal values. Modal means the most frequently observed value and is often the value of the common ancestor. The calculated modal can be misleading with a small sample, but for now those values are most likely what may have been the y-dna of the common ancestor.

The third table shows the 95% probability that the common ancestor was within the listed number of years. This table is not as accurate as data seen at your logon at FTDNA. The years shown here may differ (probably may be larger) than the more precise years shown when you log on to FTDNA and ask for their FTDNATiP report (showing years to a MRCA). You should explore all the options you see there to gain a more precise number of years to the MRCA.

Light Blue: Tested lineage with a possible y-DNA proven relationship.
Orange: Tested Lineage without a y-DNA match.
Highlight: Suspect data or possible point of y-DNA mismatch.
Gray: Untested Lineage
