What new information have we discovered with DNA ?
The four traditional Phelps lines of New England were not biologically related in recent historical times.
None of the tested southern Phelps were dna related to the New England Phelps.
There is no biological relationship between William and George Phelps of early New England.

"Modal" means most frequently observed value and is often the value of the common ancestor. The calculated modal can be misleading with a small sample. Kits in this line which do not match well are not shown. To do so would distort the modal values
Considering these good matches - even with just a few tests - with well researched ancestries, it is very likely we have a proven lineage back to William Phelps ca 1593-1672, which is remarkable. Note there are three confirming tests going back to Lt. Timothy Phelps. Of course, more confirming test would be supportive.
Includes Kits: 80530, 84495, N25758, 28088, 55020, 54220
INDEX TO COLOR CODE:
Blue: Tested Lineage with a very likely y-DNA proven relationship.
Light Blue: Tested lineage with a possible y-DNA proven relationship.
Orange: Tested Lineage without a y-DNA match.
Highlight: Suspect data or possible point of y-DNA mismatch.
Gray: Untested Lineage

The below line, 54220 with 12 markers, does not match DNA with the above lines. If we assume the tests of the above lines validate their ancestry , then this line, 54220, should match with kit 55020, but does not. Curiously this kit weakly matches 8 of 12 with kit N6009 in NE group 2 and 7 of 12 with kit 75309 in the southern Phelps lines. Future tests of these lines possibly may provide alternative solutions. An upgrade to 25 markers or more is recommended. Also tests for other descendants of this line is recommended.

The tables below were computed using the close matching kits of this line. To include the others would distort the determination of the modal or most often seen values.

The data here is from a tool which simulates FTDNA's analysis but may less accurate.
Similar data in these tables can be see at your logon at FTDNA. Modal indicates the values seen most often and may be that of the common ancestor to all the kits.
